The Borgou and Atacora Regions, which constitutes the northern part of the country, is characterized by the richly varied fauna of the Pendjari National Park and the "W" National Park. The Niger River flows through this region and has created centers of commerce along its banks. Of notable mention is the International Market of Malanville. The region is also home to the Villages, Sacred Caves and Natural Swimming Pools of Tanekas. The breathtaking Tanougou Falls can be viewed in the Atacoras as well as the castle-type, traditional mud huts of the Betamaribe, commonly called "Tata Somba," which can be viewed in Natitingou and its vicinities.
The Mono Region, which lies in the southern part of the country near the Atlantic Ocean is provided with exhilarating views of the scenery the river Mono provides as it forces its way through a narrow opening known as the "Mouth of the Lion" at Grand Popo, into the Atlantic Ocean. From the Adjallala Falls, views can be seen of the woody countryside. The Hot Springs of Possotome and Bopa are unique and must be seen by visitors to the region.
One of the unique sites available in all of Africa is Ganvie, the "Village on Stilts". Africa's answer to Venice is made up of a collection of Lake Villages including Basse-so and the Nokoue with Ganvie as its metropolis. The huts of these lake villages are built with cane covered with straw and set up on stilts well rooted in the depths of the lake. These lake villages are only navigable by dug out canoes and motor boats.
Fishing serves as the economic mainstay of these lake communities and a unique fishing method is utilized. Akadjas made of stakes and bushes in open shapes (circular or triangular) are driven into the bed of the lucid Lake. Fish seeking shelter in this artificially created foliage, either find a conducive breeding enclave or an effective fishing net.
