Ghana Expedition
Sample itinerary is based on New York departure utilizing Ghana Airways. Departure and return days will vary per itinerary depending on airline utilized and originating airport. All itineraries are tentative and subject to change. Day 1: Wednesday Depart JFK International Airport, New York on a Ghana Airways 4.00 p.m. flight to Accra, Ghana. Day 2: Thursday Arrival at Kotoka International Airport at 6.00 a.m. Upon arrival and completion of immigration and customs formalities, you will be met by our tour guide and transferred to your hotel. A brief orientation with refreshments will take place. After resting till the early afternoon, we will embark on our city tour of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Accra, is a fast growing metropolis with a blend of Victorian and modern architecture. Venues of interest include the Artist Alliance and a visit to the workshop of coffin makers featured in the National Geographic magazine. We will also drive through the campuses of Achimota Secondary School and the University of Ghana, at Legon. Asi Ocanseyıs Tye and Dye fabric shop will be our last stop, where fabric can be purchased for custom designed African fashions. Evening Welcome Dinner with fashion show. During the show, you can order custom made African fashions. Welcome Dinner included Day 3: Friday Today we continue our tour of Accra. Ghana played a pioneering role in the struggle by African countries to gain independence from colonialist. A visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Park and the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Pan Africanism, will give us insight into the countrys struggle for independence and how these pioneers, namely Dubois, Marcus Garvey, George Padmore and Kwame Nkrumah led the movement to unite the Nations of Africa. Our last stop will be at the Arts Center to shop for various arts, crafts, fashions and jewelry. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch on own account Day 4: Saturday After breakfast we will check out of the hotel and embark on an hour plus drive to White Sands Beach Resort at Gomoah Fetteh. Spend the day relaxing on a golden sand, palm-fringed beach, swimming in the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean or engaging in a variety of water recreation sports activities. We will relax on the beach till late afternoon before embarking on a scenic drive along the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Coast. Upon arrival, we will check in to our hotel. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch on own account Day 5: Sunday The morning will be spent on a city tour of Cape Coast, the capital city of the Central Region of Ghana. Christian missionaries, who settled along the coast of Ghana during the Colonial era, established a large number of Secondary Schools (boarding high schools), which form a central part of the Ghana education system. After visiting a couple of these schools, we will also visit the University of Cape Coast. Our tour and lecture on Slavery in Ghana starts with a visit to Cape Coast Castle, classified as a United Nations World Heritage Site. This European Fort was constructed for use as a trading post and administrative center for European colonialists, but was later utilized as a holding point for Africans captured and shipped to a life of Slavery in the Americas and Caribbean. This will be an opportunity to revisit history and bear witness to "Slavery, A crime against Humanity" After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch
on own account Day 6: Monday After breakfast, the group will visit Kakum National Park to experience the exhilarating heights and views from the Canopy Walk, a bridge suspended more than 100 feet above the floor of a tropical rainforest. After a buffet lunch at the Park, we will proceed to Elmina (St. Georges) Castle, another European Fort classified as a United Nations World Heritage Site. After touring the castle, group members can head out to see the local fishing harbor and market located just outside the castle. After dinner the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch on own account Day 7: Tuesday Early morning breakfast and check out of hotel. Depart on a drive to Kumasi, the former administrative center of the Ashanti (Asante) Kingdom and current capital city of the Ashanti Region. On the way, we will stop at Assin Manso and visit Nkonkoso, the Slave River where captured Africans were afforded their last bath before being shipped off as slaves to the Americas. We will also stop at the Monument of Return located at the tomb of Samuel Carson from the US and Crystal from Jamaica, African Ancestors/Slaves returned to the motherland. The group will arrive in Kumasi around midday and check in to our hotel. After an opportunity to freshen up and have lunch, we will start our city tour of Kumasi. Venues of interests include the Kumasi Cultural Center, a visit to Manhyiaa Palace and Museum, the residence of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Ashantis (Asantes), to learn about the history and culture of the Ashanti people. We will also visit the Akomfo Anokye Memorial and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. After completion of the city tour, we will return to our hotel. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch
on own account Day 8: Wednesday After breakfast we will start our tour of the Ashanti Region by visiting the various craft villages to see Asanteheneıs royal court appointed craftsman and artisans at work creating Kente Cloth at Bonwire Village. We will also tour the Wood Carving craft village of Ahwiaa to see craftsmen and artisans creating various wood carvings and sculptures and the village of Ntonsu to see how Adinkra Cloth is made. Kente and Adinkra Cloth are symbolic of Ashanti (Asante) history and culture and can be purchased as great gift items. Our last stop on the tour will be at Ejisu Bisease to see a restored Ashanti Shrine designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure or sampling nightlife in Kumasi. Lunch
on own account Day 9: Thursday After an early breakfast and check out of the hotel, we will depart Kumasi on our return journey to Accra. The group will arrive in Accra around midday and check in to our hotel. After lunch, the afternoon will be spent running errands, packaging arts and crafts purchased during the tour and packing for our return trip to New York. In the evening, the group will have a Farewell Dinner at a private facility. After dinner, the evening will be spent completing packing for our return flight. Tour group members should settle all hotel bills and check out of their rooms before going to bed. Lunch
on own account Day 10: Friday After an early morning breakfast, the group will check out of the hotel and transfer to Kotoka International Airport at 3.00 a.m. to check in for the 6.30 a.m. flight to New York. The flight arrives at JFK International Airport at 1.30 p.m. on the same day. Upon arrival, transfer to connecting flights or rides home.
