Ghana is known worldwide for its leadership in the struggle against the colonial rule of the British Empire in Sub Saharan Africa and for the wealth, rich traditions and power of the Asante Empire in the 1800's. The Asante Empire encompassed an area, which spread over a large section of current West Africa. The (Asantes or Ashantis) became a force to contend with after they defeated the Denkyira Kingdom under the leadership of the first Asantehene (Asante King) Osei Tutu and his Royal Adviser/Priest Okomfo Anokye. Asante spirit, pride and power are symbolized by Kente Cloth, which is worn by people worldwide. Ghana also holds the distinction of being the first Black African country to gain independence from colonial rule. This historic event took place on March 6, 1957 and was facilitated by the leadership of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The name of the country was changed from Gold Coast to Ghana. The country has long been a center for the advancement of the Pan Africanist Movement, which espoused African Political Unity.
