Ghana has an abundance of scenic attractions such as rivers, lakes, highlands and forest. This picturesque tableau is populated by fascinating collections of flora and fauna including tropical plants, trees and primates, as well as different species of birds, reptiles and amphibians. Much of the indigenous flora of Ghana can be seen at the Aburi Botanical Gardens, which is less than an hour drive from the capital city Accra. A visit to the research facilities within the Gardens provides an opportunity to learn about the medicinal properties of the indigenous trees and plants. Kakum National Park, 360 square kilometers of natural rainforest, is home to rare species of birds, butterflies and mammals which can be viewed from the Canopy Walk, a rope and wooden bridge suspended 100 feet above the ground along the tree tops of the forest.

Ghana is a birdwatchers' paradise and nature lovers' delight. A visit to the Owabi Bird Sanctuary located in a forest, which surrounds an artificial lake, provides hikers along the forest trails and water's edge with an opportunity to see the best of butterflies, and migratory and indigenous birds found there. Other ecological destinations in the Ashanti Region include the Lake Bosomtwi, a quiet crater lake surrounded by forest-clad hills rich in animal and bird life, and the Bobori Forest Reserve with its Research Aboretum containing 102 different species of trees within which birds and butterflies abound. Mole Game Park in the northern part of Ghana is a Savannah haven for significant numbers of monkeys, antelopes, warthogs and elephants safe from predatory man.

Volta Lake

The Paga Crocodile Pond is inhabited by crocodiles, which are considered to be sacred, and the Shai Hills Reserve is home to families of Kob and Olive Baboons and relics of ancient Ghanaian cultures. The Volta Lake, one of Africa's largest man-made lakes is inhabited by Manatees, which are an endangered species.Cascading waterfalls such as Kintampo Falls and Boti Falls are also worth visiting.
