Ghana Cultural Synopsis
Sample itinerary is based on New York departure utilizing Ghana Airways. Departure and return days will vary per itinerary depending on airline utilized and originating airport. All itineraries are tentative and subject to change. Day 1: Friday Depart JFK International Airport, New York on a Ghana Airways 4:00 p.m. flight to Accra, Ghana. Day 2: Saturday Arrival at Kotoka International Airport at 6:00 a.m. Upon arrival and completion of immigration and customs formalities, you will be met by our tour guide and transferred to your hotel. A brief orientation with refreshments will take place. After resting till the early afternoon, we will embark on our city tour of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Accra, is a fast growing metropolis with a blend of Victorian and modern architecture. Venues of interest include the Artist Alliance and a visit to the workshop of coffin makers featured in the National Geographic magazine. We will also drive through the campuses of Achimota Secondary School and the University of Ghana, at Legon. Asi Ocanseyšs Tye and Dye fabric shop will be our last stop, where fabric can be purchased for custom designed African fashions. Evening Welcome Dinner with fashion show. During the show, you can order custom made African fashions. Welcome Dinner included Day 3: Sunday Today we continue our tour of Accra. Ghana played a pioneering role in the struggle by African countries to gain independence from colonialist. A visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Park and the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Pan Africanism, will give us insight into the countrys struggle for independence and how these pioneers, namely Dubois, Marcus Garvey, George Padmore and Kwame Nkrumah led the movement to unite the Nations of Africa. Our last stop will be at the Arts Center to shop for various arts, crafts, fashions and jewelry. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch on own account Day 4: Monday After an early breakfast and check out of the hotel, we will drive north through Ghanašs Grain Belt to Kumasi, the current capital city of the Ashanti region and erstwhile capital of the Asante Kingdom. As we drive towards our destination, the lush greenery of tropical rain forest, cocoa farms and picturesque views of mountain ranges envelop us. We arrive in Kumasi in the early afternoon and check in to our hotel. After lunch, we begin our city tour of Kumasi by visiting the Kumasi Cultural Center. Our tour of the cultural center coupled with a visit to Manhyiaa Palace and Museum, the residence of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Ashantis (Asantes), will give us an overview of the history and culture of the Ashanti People. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. Lunch on own account, Dinner included, Overnight: Crystal Rose Hotel Lunch on own account Day 5: Tuesday After breakfast our shopping filled days starts with a visit to Ejisu Bisease to see a restored Ashanti Shrine designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site. We will then drive to the various craft villages to see Asantehenešs royal court appointed craftsmen and artisans at work. This will also give us an opportunity to experience how people live in an Ashanti village. The shopping expedition starts with a visit to Bonwire Village to see how Kente Cloth is made. We will then drive to the Village of Ntonsu to see how Adinkra Cloth is made. Kente and Adinkra Cloth are symbolic of Ashanti (Asante) history and culture and can be purchased as great gift items. Our final stop will be at the Wood Carving craft village of Ahwiaa to see craftsmen and artisans creating various woodcarvings and sculptures. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure. on own account Day 6: Wednesday After an early breakfast and hotel check out, we drive through the gold mining town of Obuasi towards Cape Coast, in the Central Region of Ghana. Early afternoon arrival and check in to our hotel. A unique feature of Cape Coast is the collection of Secondary Schools (boarding high schools) located in the city. Early Christian missionaries who settled along the coast of Ghana built most of these schools. We will drive through a couple of these schools to learn about their history, and also visit the University of Cape Coast. Our lecture and exposure to the history of Slavery in Ghana will be provided through tours to Cape Coast Castle and Elmina (St. Georges) Castle, both classified as United Nations World Heritage Sites. These European Forts were constructed for use as trading posts and administrative centers for European colonialists, but were later utilized as holding points for Africans captured and shipped to a life of slavery in the Americas and Caribbean. This will be an opportunity to revisit history and bear witness to "Slavery, A crime against Humanity" Upon completion of the castles tours, we will head to our hotel and check in. After dinner, the evening will be spent at leisure Lunch on own account Day 7: Thursday The group will start its return journey after an early breakfast and check out of the hotel. We embark on a scenic drive along the coconut and palm tree fringed beaches of the Atlantic Ocean towards Accra. Upon arrival in Accra, the group will transfer to our hotel and check in. After lunch, the afternoon will be spent packaging arts and crafts purchased during the tour and packing our luggage for our return trip to New York. After a Farewell Dinner at a private facility, the evening will be spent at leisure. Tour group members should settle all hotel bills and check out of their rooms before going to bed. Day 8: Friday After an early morning breakfast, the group will check out of the hotel and transfer to Kotoka International Airport at 3.00 a.m. to check in for 6.30 a.m. flight to New York. The flight will arrive at JFK International Airport at 1.30 p.m. Upon arrival, transfer to connecting flights or rides home. |
